‘Dispatch’ alleges that the Drug Crime Investigation Division of the Incheon Metropolitan Police failed in their role as law enforcement with the late actor Lee Sun Gyun, who shockingly passed away in his own vehicle on December 27, KST.
Known for his role in the award-winning film “Parasite,” the late actor was found dead inside a car in Seoul last week. Media reports indicate that he left a note that “reads like a will.”
Lee Sun Gyun’s reputation took a hit in October due to alleged drug use, when South Korean authorities initiated an investigation on the matter.
Despite the tragic loss of the actor, the Incheon police maintained that “there were no issues in the investigation process.”
However, ‘Dispatch’ disagreed, stating that the investigation is flawed from the start.
Below is the summary of the report by ‘Dispatch’:
‘Dispatch’: While probing an illicit drug case at a high-profile adult entertainment club in Gangnam this October, the Incheon Metropolitan Police’s Drug Crime Investigation Division stumbled upon the name of a well-known celebrity.
Incheon police compiled reports on Lee Sun Gyun, based on details from ‘Kim’, a 29-year-old entertainment manager, on October 18 KST. The actor is reported to have administered illegal drugs, including marijuana, at a residence in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul in 2023. Additionally, seven individuals, including ‘Kim’, are reported to have administered the illegal drug philopon at a Gangnam establishment on June 20, 2023.
The Gyeonggi Shinmun reported the investigation of top star ‘L’ for drug offenses on October 19, 2023, following a police report. ‘Dispatch’ suggested Lee Sun Gyun was a scapegoat for ‘Kim,’ aiming for leniency, and the police keen to impress superiors. ‘Kim,’ with six previous drug-related convictions, was facing jail. After extorting 300 million KRW from Lee Sun Gyun, she named him in the investigation.
On Nov 24, Lee Sun Gyun’s second hair follicle test was negative, leading to public criticism of the police for multiple drug tests without solid evidence. That evening, KBS News reported a phone call between Lee and ‘Kim’, shifting focus from the test results. A month later, JTBC cited a police statement saying Lee claimed he was led to believe he was administering sleep medication.
News outlets received the information as Lee Sun Gyun requested a lie detector test to verify Kim’s claims. ‘Kim’ sought ways to expose someone, while Incheon police, eager to show progress in the “War against Drugs” campaign, aimed to divert attention to a high-profile drug case. When Lee Sun Gyun’s drug tests consistently returned negative, police leaked details about his private life to save face.
