Following the release of Part 1 of Gyeongseong Creature, female lead Han So Hee has received hateful comments on her Instagram post.
Han So Hee celebrates the global premiere of the show, featuring a photo of Korean independence activist An Jung Geun. He was widely known for assassinating Japanese politician Itō Hirobumi in 1909. Itō Hirobumi served as the Resident-General of Korea during Imperial Japan’s rule at the time. Ahn’s imprisonment and execution by Imperial authorities in 1910 made him a symbol of resistance against Japanese occupation in Korean history.
The South Korean actress commented, “It’s not about the romance in Gyeongseong. Not about the creatures mid-Japanese rule. These stories are from the people of the brilliantly dark times. Those who had to fight head on against the monsters born from the dehumanizing experiments. It’s about the spring of that year, when embracing one another in love was the only way to become stronger.”
The show’s depiction of Japanese rule in Korea, along with the associated sentiment, prompted criticism from Japanese fans. Many expressed their disappointment with the actress, such as:
“It’s a pity to feel the nationality of the old ideas that never disappears… I wonder if it’s been hidden throughout history. I can’t understand this… Nevertheless, I thought it was a post that wasn’t in line with global modernity.”
“I give up a fan. Goodbye.”
“I’m so glad I didn’t come from such a low nationality, worst country.”
“Ah~~ I’m glad I’m not Korean.”
“I want to lock a Korean in a poison gas chamber and die hard.”
“It’s a shame that celebrities can’t tell the difference between what you should and shouldn’t say on social media.”
“Never come to Japan again.”
“Posting a photo without considering the feelings of the Japanese people. I didn’t think Han So Hee was not that kind of person, but now I am disappointed.”
However, Korean netizens defended the South Korean actress for highlighting the history of Korea’s colonial past under Japanese rule.
“It can be difficult for her to post such things as an actress, but I am thankful and proud that this has a positive influence.”
“Most of Japan’s education system does not teach in detail what the Japanese military did in the past,”
“Because most of the [Japanese] citizens do not know about the past, they criticize people who speak ill of Japan. I was saddened by this statement (Han So Hee’s post), but I wanted to look back on what happened in the past.”
On December 27, Professor Seo Kyoung Duk from Sungshin University defended Han So Hee. He described the reactions from Japanese netizens as “absurd” and attributed them to a lack of unbiased historical knowledge in Japan.
