IU’s latest music video, “Love Wins All”, featuring BTS’ V, faces a controversy where some netizens criticized the music video’s conceptualization referring to ableism.

BTS’ V recently starred in a music video that was released yesterday, earning acclaim from K-netizens. V is gaining traction on social media for his impressive acting alongside IU. Despite the positive reception, there are criticisms about the MV’s storyline and characters, with some suggesting that it may exhibit favoritism towards able-bodied individuals and lack representation for people with disabilities.

In the music video, IU, portraying a character with hearing impairment, and V, representing someone who has lost their sight, observe the romantic relationships of non-disabled couples using camcorders.

Some critics argue that the portrayal of IU and V as disabled characters may lead to their objectification, and the MV’s conclusion, where a world free of hate and discrimination is depicted, is seen by some as implying the elimination of disabilities. Conversely, others argue that confining individuals who experience prejudice solely to a disability perpetuates biased perspectives.

Amidst the ongoing debate, attention has been drawn to IU’s previous interaction with actor Ha Ji Sung, who utilizes a wheelchair. The two recently crossed paths at the ‘Baeksang Arts Awards’ ceremony, where IU suggested taking photos together and offered encouragement to Ha Ji Sung, who was grappling with the challenge of participating in a group photo due to his wheelchair.

IU’s actual consideration for actors with disabilities brought up comments like,

“You shouldn’t jump to conclusions based on the interpretation of a music video.”

“You can’t say IU is belittling the disabled after looking at her actual actions.”

“It’s unfortunate the music video is being overly interpreted.”

Meanwhile, the ‘Love Wins All’ music video was still in the number 1 spot on Youtube, garnering 22 million views nationwide.
