‘4th-Gen’s girl group LE SSERAFIM receives backlash in Korean media following Coachella performance

Korean netizens and international fans are discussing the criticism surrounding LE SSERAFIM’s performance at Coachella 2024.

LE SSERAFIM graced the stage of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, delivering renditions of their popular songs like “ANTIFRAGILE,” “Perfect Night,” “Fire in the Belly,” “EASY,” “FEARLESS,” “UNFORGIVEN,” and more.

https://twitter.com/streamaespa/status/1779392383609921731

However, certain aspects of the group’s performance garnered attention on social media and online forums for being subpar, particularly regarding their live vocal abilities, leading to widespread backlash and criticism.

Additionally, online reactions to the group’s Coachella appearance were mixed. Some provided constructive feedback on areas for improvement, suggesting that HYBE, their management company, offer additional vocal training to the members.

Others remained neutral, acknowledging LE SSERAFIM’s significance as performers at a major global music festival while expressing reservations about their readiness for such a large-scale event.

Furthermore, the controversy escalated when one of the members, LE SSEEAFIRM Sakura, who had been heavily criticized, defended their Coachella performance on the platform Weverse.

We, who debuted less than two years ago and have only toured once, stood proudly on the Coachella stage, enjoyed ourselves, and gave our all to this performance.

That alone made it truly a day that defines both life and LE SSERAFIM for me. FEARNOTs, you too will face many challenges and injustices in life. But only you truly know what you have done.

I seriously prepared for this stage, struggled through it, and enjoyed it. On the day of the show, I believe I was able to show everything. To some eyes, it might appear immature, but no one is perfect for everyone, and it is an undeniable fact that, among all the stages we have shown, this was the best. That’s why I’m very excited to become a better team, and I really want to work even harder.”

— LE SSERAFIM’s Sakura

Sakura indirectly addressed the backlash, claiming to have been proud that her team gave it their best. She thanked the fans who stood by them and declared they would continue working hard to deliver their best.

This sparked further debates about live vocal authenticity in K-pop and the talent level of groups under HYBE.

Park Min Young defends BoA against acting criticism

Park Min Young defended BoA after online criticisms of her acting abilities on “Marry My Husband” by Korean netizens went viral.

Min Young represented BoA in a recent interview with Newsen, which coincided with the conclusion of the popular series “Marry My Husband,” which ended on February 20.

In addition, Young discussed the feedback BoA got while portraying Oh Yu Ra. Viewers’ opinions of BoA, who joined the cast at the end of the drama, were divided by her performance. BoA’s performance was panned by several viewers as detracting from the drama.

Young carefully responded, “I don’t want to defend or take sides, but personally, I think it’s difficult for anyone to join a drama midway. It’s hard even for veteran actors, and joining a popular drama midway is even harder.”

“She took on a really difficult and challenging role, and I hope people can see beyond the acting and appreciate it as something beautiful. BoA and I are the same age, so just looking at her, I think, ‘We’ve both endured a lot.’ I did my best during filming, and I hope people can recognize that she did her best too,” she said.

“Fortunately, we have a lot of captivating villains in the drama, and with BoA’s addition, it may feel frustrating, but I think it can also be a buildup for another surprise. I hope people will see it positively,” she added.

Meanwhile, the debate over BoA’s lips went viral last week when some Korean netizens noticed that her lips had an unrealistic shape and assumed that this was caused by plastic surgery.

“Queen of Tears” has been consistently shattering records since its 12th episode, surpassing the viewership rating of “Goblin,” which previously held the highest viewership record for a tvN drama at 20.5%, aired in 2017.

Authorities to probe ENHYPEN airport incident

MANILA, PHILIPPINES — NAIA is now under investigation after a security personnel was recorded conducting an ‘unprofessional’ security check on members of the Kpop group ENHYPEN. The airport incident has since enraged fans of ENYPEN.

Social media was abuzz after a video of a NAIA staff doing a pat down with members of the K-pop group ENHYPEN went viral. The security personnel was seen ‘giggling’ while conducting the frisking.

On Monday, the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) released a statement saying it will probe the “unprofessional behavior” of the staff.

“The management is currently investigating the matter to determine the extent of violation committed based on existing rules and security screening protocols, if any, and impose appropriate administrative sanctions, should it be necessary,” OTS said in a statement.

“Rest assured that the OTS shall never tolerate any unprofessional behavior towards the riding public,” added OTS.

Engenes call out NAIA on social media

Engene, ENHYPEN’s official fan base, flooded social media, raising the issue of the airport incident.

Some observations pointed out that the staff was not wearing gloves while frisking the K-pop idols. Fans said it is a clear violation of the non-contact security check policy of NAIA.

Others found hidden cameras recording the boys during departure procedures. The act is a clear violation of the airport’s policy against filming at security screening checkpoints.

“While we understand the excitement brought about by the presence of these Korean artists, we remind not only our personnel, but all airport users, that unauthorized filming at our security screening checkpoints is not allowed as a matter of policy,” said OTS in the same statement.

Read the full statement by OTS below:

The viral video originally posted on Tiktok has been deleted by the original poster. However, fans were able to download the video to raise the issue with the proper authorities.
